It has been 15 years since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which aimed to help nations reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and avoid the harmful effects of climate change.

Since that time, as nations have grown and industrialisation has increased these targets have proven hard to reach. The World Bank has also asserted that it has only had a small effect on curbing global emissions.
